Tram route 13 from Kalasatama to Pasila

Tram route 13, built in Helsinki from Kalasatama to Pasila, has won the Environmental Structure of the Year 2025 Award. The 4.5-kilometre long tram route connects key city areas, improves the effectiveness of public transport, and increases the appeal, safety, and accessibility of the urban environments.

The project was distinguished by its holistic urban design approach, a philosophy of strong responsibility, and extensive use of circular economy. The tram route serves as an example of how sustainable development, multidisciplinary cooperation, and human-driven design can be integrated into a complex infra project.

Special attention was paid in the project to the execution of sustainable solutions: the recycling rate of materials was almost 90 percent and the use of low-carbon concrete, for example, reduced carbon emissions.

Recycled stone material was utilised in construction in an abundance, including natural stone slabs removed from streets, edging Stones as well as recycled sand and growing media.
