Development of eco-innovative technology for concreting in the arctic region

In Betoni 3/2019, we introduced our ARCTICecocrete project, which was funded by the Interreg Nord EU program. This article presents the main results of the project, which ended during the summer 2021. The partners of the ARCTICecocrete project were the University of Oulu, the Luleå University of Technology and Sintef Narvik. The University of Oulu studied novel, not yet standardized binder recipes that harden at subzero temperatures. Luleå’s group studied blast furnace slag containing eco-concrete and how conventional concrete antifreeze admixtures are suitable for eco-concrete. Sintef’s role was to study the hydronic heating system as well as the concrete temperature during transport. We were active with industrial partners in various fields, such as Saint Gobain, Oulun Energia, Peab, HeatWork and Veidekke. We found huge potential to extent the construction season and to reduce costs and environmental footprint of winter concreting.
