An update completed to Concrete Association’s 2007 publication Concrete Floor Moisture Management and Coating

Moisture management of concrete floor structures has been under development in Finland since the 1990s. Further development is needed to improve the productivity of construction and this guidebook brings together the existing knowledge, incorporating also the latest trends, practices and developments.

The publication contains basic information on the moisture behaviour of concrete and the factors affecting it before and after coating. Structures and surface structures are discussed in detail to enable the use of the correct moisture measurements for assessing coverability in the most appropriate way. Also included are damages, condition studies and life cycle and circular economy aspects.

The guidebook is only published in electronic format at this stage, as the Concrete Association is running a partly EU-funded development project (Low Carbon Well-Performing Concrete Floors), the results of which are aimed at developing an even closer assessment of the covering performance taking into account the actual moisture transfer properties of concrete. The project ends this year, so more is on the way.

The guidebook is intended for all those involved in the construction of concrete floors and moisture management which is often intrinsically linked to it. It provides practical and concrete examples and clear guidance for designers, contractors, and project promoters alike.
