Durable Stone House Award 2024 goes to developer and architects of Pyynikin Trikootehdas in Tampere

The old industrial buildings once occupied by the tricot manufacturers Pyynikin Trikootehdas are once again full of life – now as high-quality housing and versatile commercial facilities that form an active village community of its own.

The tricot factory founded in the Pyynikki area of Tampere in 1903 is a central part of the industrial history of Finland as a whole.

The operation of the tricot factory was wound down in late 1990s. The factory buildings of the area, classified to be of high value in terms of their architecture and cultural history, have been redeveloped since the end of the 2010s, in homage to their original appearance. The area now features high-standard unique apartments, a hotel, a dance school, a cafeteria-restaurant, a small brewery, and other services.

The factory property is protected in the town plan, but the amendment of the plan was designed together with the town focusing on a solution driven approach.

At present, there are already some 150 finished apartments in the Pyynikin Trikoo area. And about as many more are to be built.

The apartments reflect the history of the building. High ceilings, old external brick walls and concrete ceiling surfaces with beams create a loft atmosphere that makes its industrial history visible.

The 2024 Durable Stone House Award, which is a prize awarded to businesses and communities for implementation or renovation of high-quality brick and castin-situ buildings, went to the developer and the architects of Pyynikin Trikoo.

Pyynikin Trikoo is also an excellent example of a renovation project that creates savings in building materials and airborne emissions in comparison with demolition and new building.
