Students of architecture develop ideas for renovation and updating of suburban apartment building

In the autumn of 2022, a competition was organised for students of architecture to provide ideas for the renovation of an apartment building. The students from the Unit of Architecture at the University of Tampere were tasked with producing a renovation plan of a high architectural standard for the refurbishment and updating of apartment buildings of residential housing company Rastilankallio in the Meri-Rastila area of Helsinki.

In their comments, the jury paid attention to the architectural quality of the entries and on the entity created by the buildings and the outdoor areas. They also reviewed the functionality as well as the structural and energy solutions of the entries.

The Jury found the overall standard of the entries to be good. However, the use of materials was very limited for the additional storeys and the facades, and the opportunities offered by facade materials would have warranted a more detailed analysis. For example, additional storeys were mainly implemented with wooden structures and in many cases with also just a wooden exterior solution.

The objective of the competition, which is organised every year, is to produce versatile and feasible ideas that are of a high standard for projects carried out on suburban apartment buildings built in the 1960s–1980s to develop their functionality, carry out energy repairs on facades, provide lifts and build additional storeys. The competition has been organised since 2002 and this was the 15th time.
