Hiilidioksidipäästöjen vähentäminen rakennetussa ympäristössä on ensisijaisen tärkeää. Toisaalta päästövähennysten osalta rakennusalalla on merkittävästi säästöpotentiaalia. Lähitulevaisuudessa rakennusalan päästöjen vähentämistä kirittävät erityisesti uudisrakennusten päästörajoitukset sekä myös päästökaupan aiheuttamat kustannukset. Ei voida myöskään vähätellä tulevia EU:n taksonomian vaikutuksia rakentamisen hiilidioksidipäästöihin.
